Our union stewards are critical to the success of UFCW Local 455.
Stewards make our union stronger
A Voice for Those Who Don't Have a Voice
Stewards are the backbone of an effective union; They reach out to new members and help educate them on their rights. UFCW Local 455 stewards serve as a bridge between elected union leadership and workers on the job. They listen to co-workers and provide a confidential way for members to bring forward their ideas and concerns.
Steward Responsibilities.
A Steward must be a leader and mentor in their workplace and have earned the respect of their fellow co-workers and management. A Steward must truly value the benefits of their union job and always strive to protect those benefits. But most importantly, it is a steward’s job to inspire, lead and build a sense of unity and solidarity among the wide range of workers in our union.

How do you become a Steward?
Each Store/Plant is entitled to a certain number of Stewards. Your store may have one steward, others might have two or three depending on what is agreed upon in your CBA.
If you are interested in becoming a Union Steward and playing a more active role in your union membership, contact your Union Representative. We’ll let you know if an opening is available for your store/plant and get you started on next steps.
If a position is available, here is a general guideline we use to determine Steward readiness:
- Must be a Union member.
- Must have a strong voice for union-activism.
- Must be willing to engage/volunteer in union activity.
- Has a willingness to help others before themselves.
- Has determination to do what is just and fair.
- Willingness to read and understand your CBA and be able to interpret its meaning to others.
- Dedication and respect towards all Union Officers and Staff.
