Statement from UFCW Local 455 President W. Brandon Hopkins on the Death of Former Houston Mayor and Congressman Sylvester Turner:

We at UFCW Local 455 are deeply saddened to hear of the passing of former Houston Mayor and Congressman Sylvester Turner. Turner was a steadfast advocate for working people, a champion for labor rights, and a leader who understood the value of strong unions in building a more just and equitable city.

Turner played a key role in securing fair contracts for city employees, including firefighters, municipal workers, and first responders. He supported collective bargaining efforts and worked to expand opportunities for minority and disadvantaged workers through workforce development programs. His administration also prioritized infrastructure projects that created good-paying union jobs and pushed for policies that strengthened workers’ protections.

His leadership reflected a deep commitment to economic justice, and he maintained strong relationships with labor unions, standing with them in the fight for fair wages, benefits, and workplace rights. Turner’s legacy in labor will be remembered for his efforts to uplift working families and his belief in the power of organized labor to create a stronger, more equitable Houston.

Our thoughts and prayers are with his family, friends, and all those who were touched by his leadership and dedication. His legacy will continue to inspire the labor movement and the fight for dignity, fairness, and respect for all workers.
